Anyone home school or know of someone who home schools? (Year 1 update) (1 Viewer)

We've considered it before too. There's a decent group of homeschooled students in our area, a lot of them are pretty well adjusted socially. Probably about the same ratio as normal schools. Our biggest drawback is just the feel of such a massive change and one of us having to stay home instead of work.
Have a similar friend. Similar situation. Wife was a teacher though so that helped.

Homeschooling sounds good on the surface but I could never subject my kid to the lack of socialization plus those homeschool groups are full of religious nut jobs.
@RedSeaRising and I were chatting about public schools on our drive to Scottsbluff. Definitely concerns here near Denver too

I know a few families that do homeschool, or have homeschooled their kids. It seems to be working out pretty good for them. In being around their kids I’d say they’re sharp and really well mannered. I think the moms did most of the schooling.
I’ve talked with a few adults that were homeschooled as kids over the past few years. Seemed to me the common theme was: the schedule they had was awesome (usually by noon or early afternoon they were out playing/having fun), the school work was more advanced, and they just seem to be pretty sharp people. One ended up transferring to public school in 8th grade, mainly for sports i think, she said the school work in school was easy. She actually ended up playing sports in college. I personally haven't recognized any awkward social skills, but I’m not around them enough to have a strong opinion on that.

I just think of it from my own school years as a kid. My childhood would have been missing a lot of great experiences, friendships, and the overall school experience.
I had great teachers, teachers that sucked, and teachers of differing viewpoints. It's all part of the learning process and I'm happy my parents didn't pull me out.

Grew up Mormon, so I knew a ton of homeschooled kids. Well-adjusted homeschooled kid is like saying high-functioning autism. It's relative motherfucker.

My sister home schools her kids through middle school. She married a man in the navy and they move around a lot. I think there's like a network of military kids that are homeschooled so they do get some activity out of it. Her kid seems pretty well grounded.
I'm sure it's been said on here my #1 concern would be social development.
I had a cousin that was homeschooled and then his parents paid for him to play private school football and baseball. Now he's like a doctor or something. I dunno I don't keep up too much with cousins.
I'll say this I don't think home schooled kids turn out any worse than public school kids with the exception of the parents who say they are homeschooling when in reality they aren't doing shit at home with their kids. My wife has an aunt that homeschooled her 13 kids and after about 10 of them she pretty much stopped trying for the last 3.

13 kids...and that's only because 1 passed away at the age of 4, otherwise it'd be 14.

I wonder how it’d go if a teacher had Christian flags and Jesus posters all over their room at a public school… bullshit how some beliefs and ideas are allowed to be shoved down throats but not others.

LPS and OPS are terrible, they give other public schools a bad name. Public schools in Nebraska are great besides a few districts, move to a surrounding smaller town outside of Lincoln.

Everyone I know who was homeschooled is socially awkward AF. Also people who home school their kids are awkward AF and the kids end up that way also.
Finally, People who were homeschooled usually homeschool their kids, so it’s a never ending cycle.

Also, I respect the hell out of OP, but I find it a little funny.
He is upset that certain kids are being coddled and have “safe spaces”
So his response is to coddle his children and turn their entire life into a “safe space” by home schooling.
Certainly I am not the only one seeing the irony here?
