Following a 26-9 loss to Illinois, now ranked No. 14 in the nation, Nebraska sits at 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play. With four games remaining in the 2022 regular season, the Huskers will need win three to become bowl eligible. The last time Nebraska played in a bowl game was 2016 under Mike Riley.
The next opportunity to get in the win column comes this Saturday as PJ Fleck and his Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-3, 2-3) come to Lincoln. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. kickoff. Minnesota has won the last three games in this series and four of the last five.
On Monday, Fleck met with the local media in Minneapolis to discuss his team and his thoughts on Nebraska.
On Tuesday morning inside Memorial Stadium, Huskers' interim head coach Mickey Joseph took to the podium to field questions of his own. Here's a quick rundown of what he, as well as a few players, said.

Mickey Joseph​

>> Joseph said the players and coaches really hurt following the loss to Illinois, but he's confident there's going to be a response.
>> Joseph said there's going to be a next-man up mentality, because this time of year there's going to be injuries to deal with. Thompson is "day to day" according to Joseph, and said Thompson was held out of practice on Tuesday. Thompson will continue to see doctors this week.
>> What's the key to improving backup Chubba Purdy? Joseph said Purdy needs to settle down and be a leader when he's on the field. Joseph said he needs to talk to Purdy often in order to settle him down. "He wants to make a play so bad, he makes a bad play,” Joseph said. The coach also added Purdy had a "really good day" on Tuesday.
>> Of Purdy and Logan Smothers, Joseph said, "They both took even amount of reps with the ones today."
>> Can Joseph envision both Smothers and Purdy playing against Minnesota? "That can happen. I don't know, but that can happen."
>> Minnesota will bring the second-best rushing attack to Lincoln. The Gophers are averaging 223.13 rushing yards per game and 4.99 yards per carry, third-best in the conference.
Running back Mohamed Ibrahim has returned from an Achilles injury in last year's season-opener and is fourth in the country and second in the Big Ten in average rushing yards per game with 136.43. Ibrahim's 13 rushing scores are tied for third-most in the country.
"He's a monster, man," Joseph said of Ibrahim.
>> Nebraska statistically has the worst run defense in the conference, allowing an average of 190.13 rushing yards per game and 4.75 yards per carry, which ranks 113th in the nation. In the last two games against Purdue and Illinois, the Husker defense has given up an average of 202.5 rushing yards.
>> Jailen Weaver called Joseph on a Saturday afternoon earlier this season and said he wanted to move to the O-line. Joseph said the 6-foot-8, 345-pound Weaver, a second-year player, has moved to tackle.
>> Tanner Morgan is a sixth-year quarterback. Joseph doesn't like playing against quarterbacks who have been in the same system for so long.

Garrett Nelson​

>> Nelson wants to get Minnesota "off script" and not give the Gophers a bunch of third-and-shorts. Minnesota is converting 59.8 percent of its third downs, the best mark in the country.
>> Minnesota has won the last three games against Minnesota. Nelson has never beaten the Gophers. Does that stick in the Huskers' mind? He doesn't think so. "Control what we can control," Nelson said.
>> Nelson was asked what he thinks of Nebraska's quarterback situation. "Whoever is out there I'll have full faith and trust," Nelson said.
>> How has Joseph handled the team during this difficult stretch? "We quickly found out how much he cares about us," Nelson said.
>> Nelson didn't seem worried about how Purdy would respond. "That guys has enough internal confidence," Nelson said.

Alante Brown​

>> Brown was asked what the biggest difference is between Purdy and Smothers. Brown said "arm strength."
>> Brown said Purdy just needs to "play his game" and not be rushed. Brown said the players will "make sure he's calm."
>> Brown Minnesota has two big safeties. He knows Tyler Nubin, a starting safety for the Gophers, who is from Brown's hometown of Chicago.
>> Minnesota's defense has been strong on third down. The Gophers are holding opponents to a 24.47-percent conversion rate. "We just have to execute the minor details. It's always about the details," Brown.
>> Brown said the receivers need to be better at run blocking and identifying what coverage the defense is playing.

Colton Feist​

>> Feist said he felt the defense did OK containing Illinois running back Chase Brown. With another strong runner in Ibrahim coming to town, Feist thinks the defense will be ready to hold their ground against him.
>> Third-down defense will be important against Minnesota. "It'll be another challenge. Their O-line is good, too," Feist said.
>> Feist said, "That's his position at heart," when talking about Weaver's move from the defensive line to offensive line. Give Weaver a couple years at tackle, Feist added, and Nebraska will have something.
>> Nebraska's defense has just 12 sacks, second fewest in the Big Ten. Why is that? It's not as simple as it may seem. "Maybe there's not as many opportunities as people think," Feist said. He added that opponents are getting the ball out of the quarterbacks' hands sooner and doing more max protections.

Chancellor Brewington​

>> Brewington said his tight end room has done well against the tougher defenses Nebraska has played this season. "Our grades have been the highest against big defenses," Brewington said.
>> Brewington said he knows Joseph likes to say "It's on me," when things go south. But Brewington understands it's actually on the players. "At the end of the day, we're a player-led team," Brewington said.
>> Brewington knows the Purdys well. Their dads played sports together growing up. Brewington played with Brock Purdy, Chubba's older brother, in high school. So that helps

Ernest Hausmann​

>> Hausmann didn't take it personally when he was benched this season. He understands college football is a business and changes need to be made if things aren't working.
>> What's the difference between high school and college ball? In high school, Hausmann said, you have a second to think and react. In college, that second disappears.
