I have two senior dogs for years, both adopted around the ages of 5-8. We have one veterinarian for one dog who is our first and youngest, and they seem cool. A little bit further of a drive, but worth it.

Now the other veterinarian, who was a lot closer to my home in NW Omaha, was for my senior Golden Retriever who hates car rides. Now they are pieces of shit. Not how they treated my dog, but more like how they try to upsell everything.

The first hint was they stopped fulfilling any prescriptions, including heartgard, through Chewy, which I use for everything. They went with a different online pharmacy, which I imagine they get a cutback from using it. Then my last visit, they were 15 minutes late for my dog's checkup even though I was 15 minutes early. But a vet tech came out, retook my dog's information which they already should have had and then tried to upsell a vaccine for my dog I never heard of before. It's like, "dude, she's so skiddish to leave the house that she won't run into any issues being around standing water to catch this."

Then the vet actually came and tried to sell a few more procedures on me and pretty much said I really need to think about my dog's future health and I'm a PoS if I don't spend thousands on these procedures.

I know vets need money as a business, but I lose faith in them when they seem to be doing more to try to sell things to animal owners instead of just straight caring for animals.

Anyway, anyone else hate their vets?

I don't hate mine but I was left with a pretty sour taste in my mouth after my last visit. I have an older dog who will be 12 in March. He's seen the same two Vets his entire life as they were the only two at the clinic. Well, the clinic recently decided to hire a new vet. With my dog getting old he's starting to have some issues so I took him in. Much to my surprise, when the vet came in, it was not one of the two vets I've literally always seen but a brand new one. I had no heads up it wouldn't be one of the other two so it was very awkward. The least they could've done is told me it'd be her i'd be meeting with when I scheduled the appointment. I explained what was going on and she was very wishy washy about the problem that she thought was going on. Long story short, I'm pretty sure she completely misdiagnosed him. I was like....I'm not vet but that doesn't seem right based on what's going on. I even called the vet to try and speak with one of my regular two about it to kindly say as much and guess who called me back?

I dislike my vet as well, but she's close to my house and dislike her since she is never posts what weekends she's open. Over Xmas, our 12 year old mini schnauzer woke up in the middle of night screaming and holding up his left leg. We ended up going to a different vet and determined that he has a neck issue, but only gave him a steroid shot and gabapentin that didn't help with his pain. Wouldn't prescribe him a NSAID due to our dog having borderline renal failure, even though his bloodwork is good, just loses protein through his urine.

On Xmas day, dog still in pain, went to the emergency vet and he gave us a prescripiton of Tylenol 3 w/codeine for our dog along with muscle relaxers, that sort of help. Day after Xmas, saw our regular vet and she prescribed a NSAID that is easy on the kidneys.

My wife was still not satisifed and we went and saw a dog neurologist who wanted $5k to do a MRI which requires sedating the dog with anesthesia and if they find something, we had the choice of paying another $5k to fix any slipped or herniated discs. We ended up going the conservative route and just crate resting our dog for a month until he heals up. After a week of crate rest, the screaming has stopped and he's slowly getting better. But yes, I hate our vet and have similar issues with not being able to use Chewey and have to use their online Pharmacy for meds.

As long as they are not the one off of Fort Street, it doesn't matter.

I just hate that one in particular. Called them and left a message on filling my prescription on the heartgard order. If they don't, I'm asking for a release of medical records. I'm done.
If that’s him then this thread is about to get a whole lot more interesting 🔥

Hey motherfucker I’m your vet you could have just left me a Google review instead of blasting me on here.

Season 9 Middle Finger GIF by Shameless

Just kidding, I’m not you vet, but I probably know who you are talking about.

That’s generally what you will get in West O, unfortunately. They are catering to the rich couple in Elkhorn who spent $4,200 on a Bernedoodle and won’t blink and eye at being gouged, not the guy who adopted middle-aged dogs.

I’d recommend going to a more rural vet. Not sure where you live but if you tell me in general, I could pass along some recommendations. Also, you tend to get more down-to-earth vets at a clinic that does both large and small animal.

General rule of thumb is that if your vet has been elbow deep in a hoofed animal sometime in the last week, he ain’t gonna gouge you.

Edit: also, during Covid, the vet I’m pretty sure you are talking about implemented a policy where you stay in your car, they take your dog in, do whatever they see fit, and bring you the dog and the bill when they are done. I get that a lot of vets did something similar and had to adapt during Covid depending on location, but they took it ridiculously far in the name of being “safe,” stole a lot of people’s money imo, and kept the policy in place for far too long after Covid.

Personally, I said fuck you to the health department and kept completely open, invited people in, and didn’t change a thing, and it was so worth it.

Yes! Our vet in Alexandria commented on - I fucking kid you not - my dog’s “larger than average” vulva.

Aaaaaaaand asked “Has she complained to you about it?”

I really wanted to comment “You ma’am are a fucking moron.”

After the puppy/kitten stage we don’t go to vet unless it’s some sort of emergency. They do a low cost, traveling vaccine clinic in town where I take them each year to get up to date. The upcharges at a lot of these vets in order to just see the animal is ridiculous.

So you were the one selling all this Ivermectin!!1!!
(Ducks, runs to the Hy-Vee parking lot)
I plead the fifth, but what I will tell you is that anyone who is not politically biased and knows anything about contagious diseases and animal science would tell you that shit works and millions of lives were lost because a vaccine is much more lucrative than ivermectin and similar drugs.

That explains how happy we were last time our dog had an emergency and the vet came in and changed out of his muck boots and coveralls to check on her after checking cattle. It was a new vet for us and he couldn’t have been nicer, really seemed like the type that cares about helping animals while covering his costs but not gouging you at all.
