1429 - Joan of Arc entered the city of Orleans; she would end its months-long siege and would become known as the "Maid of Orleans."

1916 - The Easter Rebellion in Ireland ended with the surrender of Irish nationalists.

1945 - American soldiers liberated the Dachau concentration camp during World War II; Adolf Hitler married his mistress Eva Braun inside his "Fuhrerbunker" and designated Adm. Karl Doenitz president.

1946 - Twenty-eight former Japanese officials went on trial in Tokyo as war criminals; seven ended up being sentenced to death.

1957 - The SM-1, the first military nuclear power plant, was dedicated at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

1978 - Japan's Naomi Uemura, traveling by dog sled, became the first person to reach the North Pole alone.

1980 - Film director Alfred Hitchcock died at age 80.

2008 - Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama denounced his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, for what he termed "divisive and destructive" remarks on race.

2010 - The U.S. Navy officially ended its ban on women serving on submarines, saying the first woman would be reporting for duty by 2012.

2011 - Britain's Prince William married Kate Middleton in a lavish royal wedding at Westminster Abbey in London. It was estimated that more than 2 billion people worldwide watched the event.

2020 - Scientists announced the first effective treatment against the coronavirus, the experimental antiviral medication remdesivir, which they said could speed the recovery of COVID-19 patients.

2023 - Hundreds of Americans fleeing two weeks of deadly fighting in Sudan reached the east African nation's port in the first U.S.-run evacuation, completing a dangerous land journey under escort of armed drones.

1941 - Major League Baseball's Boston Bees changed their nickname to "Braves."

1961 - ABC's "Wide World of Sports" premiered.

1980 - The Detroit Lions select Oklahoma running back Billy Sims with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1981 - The New Orleans Saints select South Carolina running back George Rogers with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1981 - Steve Carlton (Philadelphia Phillies) became the first left-handed pitcher in the major leagues to get 3,000 career strikeouts.

1986 - Pitcher Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox set a major league record by striking out 20 batters in a regular nine-inning game against the Seattle Mariners. (He would repeat the feat in 1996.)

1986 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Auburn running back Bo Jackson with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2006 - The Houston Texans select North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2015 - The Baltimore Orioles beat the White Sox 8-2 at Camden Yards. The game was played without a crowd present due to the ongoing riots and protests in Baltimore. This was the first time a Major League Baseball game was played in front of an empty house.

2018 - Tennis star Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for illicitly transferring large amounts of money and hiding assets after he was declared bankrupt.
