I'll spell it out for you: Rhule knew by HT of the 2nd game he royally fucked up by hitching his wagon to Sims. We were 0-2 and Rhule knew at that point the season was fucked. He also knew that we didn't have the QBs on the roster to get us 6-4 in the last 10 games.

He tried by taking an H-back at QB and installing the option offense on the spot. That worked until the H-back almost died on the field from taking too many hits. Then he went to the 3rd string QB and that semi worked but he was rusty after getting no reps in practice and only showed slightly less propensity for being loose w the ball than the first two guys.

My read is that Rhule was trying like hell to get the team to 6-6 but he knows he largely fucked it up by picking Sims. The rest of the season after that was a long shot & they got close but couldn't eek it over the finish line.

There is the chance, like you point out, that Rhule wasn't aware that the NU fans desperately wanted a bowl game this year. Maybe Rhule would have coached harder if he only knew the NU fans wanted a bowl this year. Now you tell him!

Exactly. The inherited QB room was Smothers, HH, Purdy, Torres, and CT. Rhule should’ve had Frost recruit a better room obviously.

I truly wonder if somebody forgot to tell him the fans wanted 6 wins and a bowl game? I bet if he would have known that the fans wanted 6 wins and a bowl game then he would have coached differently and he would have tried harder. I have some connections in the athletic department so next year, if the fans decide they want 6 wins and a bowl game, I can personally make sure Rhule gets this message so that he can coach differently and try harder.

That is definitely an option.

But I’m going back to his remarks. It’s always ‘thank the fans’, ‘the fans are going through growing pains and half of the fun’, and ‘this is what you get when you hire me.’

He acts like this is what we’re okay with and should be okay with. This is miserable.

So when I say he doesn’t understand what a sixth win would have meant to the entire fanbase, I mean that from every personnel decision, every pre-determined call sheet for the offense, and every game time decision on game time management.

You know your offense is shit early on. You make sure your OC builds somewhat effective short passing game to relieve the pressure from the run game. When your QBs are known to turnover every 1 out of 10 plays, you figure out ways to put your lackluster playmakers in more effective ways to win.

Those are my clear cut and dry expectations for Rhule and Nebraska, 10 + wins by year 3.

Then Rhule will be gone in short order IMO, Rhule has to continue to develop; next year should win around 8 + IMO. Not saying we will but those are my expectations. Turn the ball over about 5 less times this year and we win what 3 more games, maybe 4?

I was hoping that 2023 was a year 2 in Rhules progression and we would skip year 1

But I think we are basically on the same track

It does a little. This is what we’re measuring improvement off in year 2.

If we cut the giveaways down to 18 next year, that’ll be a huge improvement, even though statistically it’s still not that great. And then if we see more improvement in year 3, maybe it’s down to 12 giveaways, which would be close to elite.

Rhule isn't Frost or Riley so I don't understand why what they did illuminates anything about what Rhule might do.

We've had a rotting culture here for ten years, probably longer. I want it reconstructed. That takes more than one year. I am surprised that what a lot of other fans really wanted was a 2023 trip to the Quick Lane Bowl.

I think he has a better idea how to build a program to 10 wins than whiny Nebraska fans that are ready to run him out after one year but shouted “five full years” for Scott Frost well past the point where it made any rational sense - if something needs to change, I am guessing it will change
